What kind of story can you create using this picture? Can you write it in different genres? Maybe something magical happens? Or maybe extra-terrestrials crash the party. Or maybe there’s a monster/killer on the loose who is killing the party’s guests. Or maybe it’s a romance. It could even be a party in the Old West, or sometime in history’s past in another country. You’re only limited by your imagination.

Writing Prompt: Killer Party

An assassin plans to murder his target during a New Year’s Eve party at a famous night club.

Tips & Questions:

  • Who is this assassin, and who is his intended target?
  • Does he know why the contractor wants the target killed?
  • Try to put a lot of obstacles in the way of his completing his job, including emotional obstacles (i.e.: maybe the target reminds him of someone he loved in the past, or maybe there’s something else about the target that causes him to hesitate).

Visual Writing Prompt: Nutcracker Adventure

What fantastical holiday story can you come up with starring these nutcrackers? Where do they live? What is their purpose? How does “life” change for them during this time of the year? What kind of villain(s) can you come up with for them to face? Be sure to make the obstacles realistic. Even though the story might be a fantasy, it still needs to feel as if it could happen within the world you’ve created. You can ensure this with careful planning. Even a few details (for a short story) can make all the difference.

BONUS! Visual Writing Prompt: Mary & Jesus

How can you give the original Christmas story your own unique touch? Try to give Mary and Joseph, even Jesus, their own unique personalities, as well as the innkeeper, other people they encounter on their way to Bethlehem, and the shepherds, wise men, and angels.

Or maybe this statue has fallen into the wrong hands. Stolen from a church or a museum? Who stole it and why? How will the theft affect people? Who’s job is it to find it?
